Alabama alumnus thanks mentor by leading scholarship effort
Hugh Bateman, a former longtime pre-med advisor to University of Mississippi students, center, is being honored with the creation of the Dr. Hugh Bateman Scholarship Endowment. Providing the lead gift for the Bateman Scholarship is Dr. John Harrison of Huntsville, Ala., a pathologist, right. Joining them at a reception hosted in the Brandt Memory House, home to the University of Mississippi Foundation, is interim Dean of Liberal Arts Richard Forgette, left. Harrison was inspired to make the gift to recognize Bateman for the guidance he provided him as an Ole Miss student and encourages others to do the same. Gifts of all sizes will make a difference. When the fund becomes fully endowed, the Bateman Scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate students studying in the pre-med curriculum with the intent to proceed to medical school.

Individuals and organizations that would like to contribute can send a check with the Hugh Bateman Scholarship noted in the memo line to the University of Mississippi Foundation, 406 University Ave., Oxford, Miss. 38655; or online at www.umfoundation.com/makeagift. For more information, call Ron Wilson, a development officer for the College of Liberal Arts, at jrwilso3@olemiss.edu or 662-915-1755.
