Anew $100,000 Ole Miss Women’s Council Scholarship comes from an unlikely source: a senior engineering major who has paid her own way through college.

Usually considered out of range for a typical college student, this philanthropy is possible for honors student Margaret Bardwell through the option of a life insurance policy naming the university as beneficiary.
Coming from the tradition of outspoken, independent women, Bardwell not only asserts her independence by establishing the scholarship but also chooses to honor her mother, Patsy Brumfield of Tupelo, Miss., and her maternal grandmother, the

When Nancy Harrelson Stumberg talks about Ole Miss, it is with incredible confidence, optimism and above all, gratitude and affection. The 1975 graduate demonstrates her understanding of the mission of the University of Mississippi Foundation and the vision established by Chancellor Khayat.

“Ole Miss is one of the most meaningful places in my life,” says Stumberg. “I decided long ago that I wanted to further the mission of the foundation, to show my gratitude for my education, and to support Chancellor Khayat in any way possible.”

W hen Prescott “Peck” Sherman attended Ole Miss during the Depression, he held down several jobs: one, a morning paper route, which was early enough not to interfere with his classes; and another at a local clothing store that enabled him to buy his own clothes. The third job, which was cleaning the cement lab in the School of Engineering where he was enrolled, paid his meal ticket.
During his junior and senior years, Sherman served as business manager for the Mississippian, the school newspaper; and last, but not least, he delivered flowers for

R ecognizing the need for talented young people in today’s high-quality and complex field of health care, Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation of Memphis has become the first corporate sponsor of an Ole Miss Women’s Council Scholarship.
The foundation’s $125,000 endowment produces the Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. Council Scholarship designated for students interested in pursuing a profession in health care and helps fund the Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy’s Leadership-Mentorship Program.
Ellen Rolfes, the university’s major gifts officer and principal architect of the Women’s Council, says the scholarship has expanded the

Four years ago when the idea of involving women more directly with the University of Mississippi Foundation was first conceived, it was merely a dream that major corporations would ultimately play a part in the Ole Miss Women’s Council for Philanthropy.
Recently the FedEx Corp. of Memphis established the Fedex Council Scholarship Endowment fund with a gift of $150,000, becoming one of the first corporations to participate in the innovative Women’s Council initiative.
“We believe the Women’s Council is a model for mentoring. The FedEx Council Scholarship Endowment is a wholesome and unique
